Women’s ice hockey is on the march in Streatham

The ice rink on the High Road is not just home to the Redhawks. You can also come to watch Streatham Storm, London’s only women’s ice hockey team – for free!

With more than 35 players registered for the 2016-17 season, there is a surge of optimism this year as Storm is running teams in both the English women’s Premier league and in Division One.

Storm just missed out on promotion to the Elite league last season, finishing as runners-up in the Premier league play-offs. Determined to go one better this time around, the Premier league team started this season with two cracking wins against Nottingham Vipers and Kingston Diamonds. An exciting 4-4 home draw against league leaders Milton Keynes left Storm in a great position to push for promotion again.

Most of last year’s Premier team are back for the new campaign. But with lots of new players joining – and five skaters guesting from Gillingham’s Invicta - the club is also icing a Division One team, which kicked off their campaign with another pulsating 4-4 draw at home against Basingstoke Bison Ladies.

“There is a real buzz around the club this year,” says Hannah Carnegy, the club chair and captain. “I’ve never seen so many women on the ice at our training sessions before. There is a great atmosphere and we really want to build the club into one of the best womens’ teams in the country.”

The Storm roster includes players from Canada and all over Europe but the backbone of the club are home-grown players such as Fiona King, a former GB star, Ruth Cattell, a top-ranked goalie, and Carnegy, a former GB Universities and England player.

If you want to join the action, the club is always looking for more players, of all ages and experience. If you learnt to skate as a youngster and fancy giving it a go, come and join the action. If you have never skated before, get some lessons first and then get in touch. It is a safe and friendly way to have a lot of fun. We have members from age 15 up to north of 40!
