The 9th Annual Herne Hill Harriers Cross Country and Anthony Gold Fun Run

Every year towards the end of September hundreds of people ascend Streatham Common and cheer on groups of adults and young children running pell-mell around the Common. Some of them have the signatory red and black striped vests of the Herne Hill Harriers, our local athletics club.

Herne Hill Harriers (based for decades now at Tooting Bec Athletics Track in Streatham Park) are run completely by volunteers and offer young people an accessible and affordable way to get into competitive sport, with world-class coaches and training and all for a pittance. Athletics is one of the least expensive participatory sports and (in my opinion) attracts diverse range of some of the nicest people in the country. But it's not all worthiness, Herne Hill's teams have produced world champions and Olympic competitors.

This year's Fuin Run, sponsored by Anthony Gold Solicitors features a new 2 lap course to give spectators a better chance of seeing the kids perform. There have been course modifications to the 6-mile cross-country course, as well, after Lambeth said the race left the Common muddy last year and charged the club £500. Shameful as HHH is a non-profit run by volunteers and the race bring hundreds of shoppers/lunchers to Streatham every year.

Fitness First will be sponsoring with warmup/workout sessions, goodie bags and water bottles. Macmillan Cancer Support will be present gathering support and this year Anthony Gold will sponsor prizes for top primary school, and for the firs time this year, the top secondary school finishing teams.

Come out, join the fun and maybe discover the fun of running through a beautiful bit of Streatham countryside.
